We had the good fortune of connecting with Frederick Fulmer / James Berg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Frederick / James, how does your business help the community?
Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency provides artists with a studio and living space and monetary stipend to encourage the creation of new works of art. JTHAR is located in Joshua Tree, ca. next to the National Park which presents the opportunity to learn about the Mojave Desert and it ecology.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Established in 2007, Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency (JTHAR) is an artist-centric nonprofit residency that awards an international community of artists the gifts of time and space amidst the extraordinary natural beauty of Joshua Tree National Park. Seven week residencies include scholarship funds, living accommodations, and studio space designed to accommodate a broad range of artistic activity and open studio events.
JTHAR respects the critical role artists play in our society, and it aims to foster creativity, trust, courage, diversity and acceptance by facilitating opportunities for exploring, experimenting, quiet reflection, engagement and cross-cultural exchange with the vibrant local community. JTHAR establishes space for inspiration to happen, so artists can do the work of innovating, changing the cultural landscape and generating a fresh look at the way we connect to each other and to the world.

We wanted to share the beautiful & transformative experience of the Mojave Desert. As a painter and writer James and I wanted others to experience this magical environment for inspiration.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers?
If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

As part of the residency we introduce the artists to community members in the area. We also provide adventures to Joshua Tree National Park, the Noah Purifoy Outdoor Museum, local galleries & Palm Springs Art Museum. Friends of Joshua Tree offers our artists an opportunity to learn about climbing in the park.
The artists are offered an open studio for community to view their work from the seven week residency.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

Board Members, Alma Ruiz, Katy Niner, Ruth Rieman, Barbara Schwan, Timothy & Judy Hearsum. Ed Ruscha, Grow Annenberg Foundation Community support.
