Since 2011, Mathew Tom has through videos, photographs and paintings been describing a fictional spiritual community called Society of Friends. It is a reflection of his ideas of utopian society turned dystopian through boredom, vanity and a desire to believe. Following ideas of Psychoanalysis, Mathew has structured his works between the different levels of the mind. Painting represent the unconscious (i.e. the surreal, the true mind), the videos the superconscious (i.e. the mind affected by supernatural influences) and photographs the conscious (normal world).
